It will start, barely idle, try to give it gas, it dies... fuel pump or fuel injector?

Sounds like the next step is to make sure there is power at the pump. If that passes time to pull the tank and replace the pump.

Re: 97 Voyager fuel prob

I don't see how it could start at all with 0 fuel pressure. Have you put a fuel pressure gauge on the test point of the fuel rail?. Can you hear the pump running for 2 seconds or so when you to the key to the run (not start) position. If you can hear the pumo running and the fuel pressure is too low.....Have you ever changed the fuel filter? It sits on top of the tank and is a PITA to get to and change, but a restricted filter is a very likely culprit if the pump runs.

Plugged fuel filters do not cause no starts!

Re: 97 Voyager fuel prob

Airjet....I agree with you, but he says it does start...barely runs/idles. If he really has 0 fuel pressure how does it run at all? on air? It obviously has some fuel getting to the engine which means he has to have some amount of fuel pressure

If he wants to eliminate fuel pump/fuel issues...1st step is to check the fuel pressure with a guage. If he has a lean fuel situation it shouldn't it be throwing a check engine light.. P-171? He may off base thinking it's fuel anyway. If he has low fuel pressure and he hasn't changed the filter in a long time that's a good place to start before dropping the tank and changing the pump.

Re: 97 Voyager fuel prob

That's pretty common for vehicles to start and stutter with the little pressure left or built up after a hot soak in the fuel rail after a pump failure. Sometimes you can repeat this several times before it will not start at all.

He states he has 0 fuel pressure. We don't know if the pump can be heard running or not and we don't know if the pump is being supplied with power. Why not take a couple minutes to figure out those 2 things and either condemn the pump or start looking for an electrical failure instead of replacing a fuel filter that will do nothing except leave one frustrated because it didn't fix it. Once the cause of the condition is figured out and repaired than focus on the maintenance items that have may have been neglected.

Re: 97 Voyager fuel prob

There's a reason why the fuel filter isn't on the scheduled maintenance list.
