I really need some help.....

ok, im new to these forums, so i dont know if anyone has answered to a problem like this. Ive got a 95 sc1, 110,000k miles. this sounds strange, but while im driving, all of a sudden, when i try to accelerate, the car hesitates, and the rpms drop. then the car shuts off. i try to start it back up, but it takes a couple sec. and it wont start without giving it a little gas. BUT when it starts back up, the engine sounds horrible. Theres this nasty rattling sound, and the rpms jump from 1k to 500 to 1k and up and down. when i give it gas, it sounds fine, but when i let it idle again, the rpms jump, and it still sounds horrible. so i turn it off and let it sit for maybe 10 min, and start it up again. when it starts, i give it a little gas again, and the rpms, very slowly drop back to normal, and then the engine sounds fine. the car drives fine for a while, then this whole problem starts up again. I replaced the spark plugs and wires recently, full tank of gas, plenty of oil , and all other fluids are fine. ive had suggestions that its the fuel filter is clogged.... If its clogged, WHERE IS IT?? i feel if my car keeps breaking down like this, eventually it wont start again. Someone PLEASE help. THANKS

Your fuel filter is below the brake master cylinder, bolted to the firewall. Just follow the line from the fel rail and you'll find it.

i'm thinking restricted exhaust.

when the engine is cold, jack up the car and check the catalyic convertior, it is just behind the flexpipe, if you shake it and it rattles, it needs replaced. or remove the front O2 sensor and see if preformance improves.
