1991 Dakota 2.5 bucking and jerking

My hubby has a 91 Dakota with a 2.5 l engine, and it has started bucking and jerking. It does not do it all the time, but it will give you whiplash when it does. He has replaced plugs, wires, and fuel filter. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much.

does it do it when coming to a stop. like a stick shift in the wrong gear. if so, it could be a torque converter and there should be a plug going into the transmission that you can just unplug. you won't have overdrive anymore, but it's a cheap fix for an old car.

Sorry, I forgot to post that it is a manual transmission. It does it intermittently, not all the time. Sometimes smooth as silk, other times like riding a bucking bronc, and you never know when it will do it. Thanks for the help.
