Lost my GTP

I haven't been around in a while, but I thought I'd share this story anyway. I had a '99 GTP coupe that I lost last year...due to fire. As I'm sure you all know now, GM recalled these cars because of the valve cover gaskets spraying oil on the manifold and causing fires - my car burned - and this is no joke - the Monday before the recall was officially announced. I got the letter from GM a week to the day after my car burned.

We contacted GM, and they kept giving us the runaround about doing anything, so I finally had to file a claim on my insurance. Luckily my full-coverage insurance covers a complete loss from fire. The insurance company then pursued GM in an effort to get them to reimburse the insurance company for the claim - and even though an independent investigator determined that the valve cover gaskets were the cause for the fire, somehow GM managed to weasel out of it.

So now, I've got a '98 Camaro - and I miss the GTP terribly - mostly the horsepower. But now, I'll be found over in the Camaro forums when I post!

(One day I fully intend to have another GTP...I loved the two I had too much to give up on them!)

Re: Lost my GTP

SO sorry to hear about your loss. I too had a valve cover leak. I repalced both of them and a week later got the recall letter. (which the dealership fix was not much more than a band aid fix anyways). Either way it does not get your car back. I am suprized to hear the camaro has less HP than the GTP. But then again, I smoked a firebird by a long shot.

Well, good luck with everything....

Re: Lost my GTP

Yeah, the Camaro I got is an un-supercharged 3800 - the GTP had about 40 more horsepower. I wanted a Z/28, but couldn't afford the insurance.

I knew my valve cover gaskets were leaking, and was considering having them replaced - just hadn't gotten to it yet. Hind sight is 20/20.
