you have too much hc my 83 used to run at 15-20 ppm..

also the CO [carbon monoxide ] is too high ..

this is usually the EGR sticking...the valve has a spring and with time and heat this spring gets too weak..egr valves on these vehicle last about 80,ooomi.....

so when the check your vehicle the EGR is opening too much and this sends too much exhaust gas into the intake which causes these readings to be to high....not enough air...

the egr is used to prevent detonation by reducing the combustion chamber temp...this is done by reducing the oxygen level..

Re: My 1988 caprice failed emissions

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. Could the catalytic converter cause these problems or not?

the Jersey limits are HC-220, CO%-1.20

There is no NOx reading on the faile paperwork. they did the 2500 RPM Emissions test only CO25 passed at 11.55

Thank you,

Vinnie

didn't you read my reply? what did you do to check out the EGR valve..

the cat converter only works when the engine is cold and is polluting ..the cat converter cannot work continuously ..if it did it would melt...

if the valve is 8yrs old or has more than 80,ooomi it is worn out..get new one..compare the spring tension to new one before installing..the new one will be stronger...spring wears out causing valve to open too much..

if you don't have the 70.oo for new get a good looking one at the scrap yard...though that part may be hard to come across...
