Differental problem

I had my 2002 Liberty in for servicing last week and when Chrysler checked the diff fluid, they noticed it needed changing as is was black and not honey colour like it should. So today I took it back into them and they changed the fluid in the front and rear and all of a sudden I am now expereincing a rather annoying rubbing sound from the rear end when I turn corners almost like a grinding sound. This does not occur when the jeep is in 4x4 only when it is in 2wd. Any help or suggestions would be great. Before the fluid change this rubbing sound was did not exist.
Thanks
Dman

Re: Differental problem

Yay Toronto!!!

Chances are, you have a limited-slip differential in the rear axle. These diffs require a special lube or additive for them to work properly.

Sometimes the additive can be added separately, but usually mechanics use axle lube with the additive built-in.

If the mechanic uses just regular gear lube, the limited-slip diff will make noise, as yours is. Take it back to the dealer asap and have them put the correct lube in. Aviod driving it in the present condition too much more, or else the differential clutches will wear out too fast.

X2

Take it back to the dealer and have the correct fluid and additive put in it! A "quicky-lube" changed the oil and all of the fluids in my wifes Sport-Trac on an out of state trip. I didn't stand there and watch them like I should have! They used the wrong fluid in the rear. Her Sport-Trac has 4.11 gearing with limited-slip...................it was chattering before we got 5 miles away! needless to say I turned around and went straight back!
