Speedo doing wacky things on my 92 SE

92 SE 3.3 V6, the speedo will work then it will not. It may come up to 20 mph then go up or even drop back to 0. Then another day it may work perfect. I had a VSS fault awhile back and replaced the sensor but didn't make a difference. Is this in the cluster or is the a body control modual or what could be doing this?? The cruise works if that helps and the lockup torque converter locks up although it didn't today?? I diffenately need a working speedo. I've been looking around for a cluster but no one seems to have the full gauge cluster just the one without the tach. Please help.

Which VSS did you replace ? One on the trans ?

Id start by checking the plug ins and wires associated with the VSS.
Might also check teh instrument cluster if you havnt already.
Since its an intermitant problem I'd lean toward a loose or bad connection.

Being a 92 is going to be tough to find a replacement for. Check places like ebay, or other online markets. Rockauto.com and cherryauto.com are also good places to look for used and remanufactured parts.

And it is worth paying a little more for the rebuilt ones, as a used one which could fail shortly too.

I replaced the VSS on the trans, don't want to do that again. I've already checked what you have mentioned. I'm leaning it's the cluster because the cruise works and the TCC locks up so whatever sends the signal to those also sends the signal to the speedo.

I found a cluster today with only 4000 miles on it for $100 but I have to get the #s off the back of the cluster to natch that one. Well see???

Well I bought the cluster and installed. It worked perfectly for about 5 miles then quit. I thought I had it fixed. I am at a total loss now and don't know where to turn??? Does this car have some sort of body control module. It's losing it's signal from somewhere???

I bought my VSS from Advanced Auto parts so just for curosity I looked up Rock Auto and they don't show a VSS for the automatic but if you look under cruise control sensor it's exactly what I replaced. So is the cruise control sensor the same thing as the VSS? It was located down on the tranny right below the back exhaust manifold.
