1987 Mercury Grand Marquis transmission filter change and draining the trans fluid
I'm preparing to change the transmission filter on my 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis AOD transmission. I'd like to know what is the amount of trans fluid that will come out. If the transmission fluid level is full when the transmission pan is removed, how much transmission fluid should I expect to drain out before fluid stops draining? Also, after loosening one end of the pan, does a lot of fluid drain out at one time when it first starts draining or should I expect slow draining?

If you are just draining the pan and changing the filter, expect to need about 4 to 5quarts. If the pan comed down quickly, thyere will be a lot of fluid come out. If you can lower the pan real slowly, you can control the flow. Just use a large diameter pan.

Re: 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis transmission filter change and draining the trans flui
I have changed the fluid after removing the pan however I'm not done with the job. I ordered a 1/4" torque wrench to make sure I'm not over tightening the bolts of the filter and the pan. I have not driven the car but did notice it took 3 quarts of trans fluid after I removed the pan and filter. I filled it up the mark for room temperature and left it at that before driving it. I will keep all those interested updated of what happens next. By the way, I suspect the trans is bad on the car because of the facts it was shifting wierd.
