engine swap?

My dad has a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE with the 3.1L engine in it. The engine is shot and we are looking to swap it out and possibly the transmission as well. My question is whether or not we can pull the engine and tranny from a 1996 Grand Am with the 3.1 and everything work right? And is there any other things we will need to change to make this work?

Re: engine swap?

The engine from the 96 grand am uses different motor mounts and different locations for the mounts, so I am not sure if you can make it work with your car or not.

Re: engine swap?

that's understandable. What cars and from what years should I be looking for then? And can I pull both the engine and the tranny from them?

Re: engine swap?

i had a '96 Grand Am back in highschool and the engine was shot. it had a cracked block. my dad and i swapped a motor from a 95 Olsmobile that had the 3.1 so i would imagine you can make it work. we had to swap over a few sensors, and from what i can remember Tim is right...the motor mounts were in different locations however the motor still had the other location where you could just switch it over.

Re: engine swap?

It will fit and I have done it.You have switch one of the front headbolts of the front head, holding the a/c compressor bracket in place. You switch the mounts off the Grand Prix to one out of the Grand Am.The upper intake and EGR tube have to be changed too.both colant tubes have to be changed and the quick disconnect is a pain to get out and I hate them.Someone at GM needs to be strangled to death for thinking about them, the connector in the intake never comes out of the tube most of the time and the plastic release breaks

Re: engine swap?

Yeah, that heater hose on the bottom of the LIM on the grand am 3100's are a PITA! I usually just unbolt them from the LIM, then unhook thequick disconnect from the heater hose, and then replace it, plastic and all.

Back on topic, the trans in your Grand Prix is more than likely a 4t60e. I forget now, but I think the trans's in the Grand Am's are 4t40e's, so I think the trans question is a no go.

Why not swap in a 3800? =P
