Hey all,
I need a quick answer here. I'm looking at buyin an '01 Grand Cherokee with a bad 4.0 Liter. Called the junkyad, and they tell me that it's '01, or '02 GC only for that motor. Doesn't make sense to me, does anyone on here know for sure? I can't imagine them casting a special block just for '01, or '02 Grand Cherokee's????? Thanks in advance - Gary.

Re: 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.0 Engine Swap?
An used 4.0 is at least $1,200.00 and it is cheaper to rebuild it.Just did one a couple weeks ago just for a grand and the cylinders had to be bored out, broke a piston and scored #6 cylinder badly.I believe 1999 and 2000 will fit too, went to the coil over plug ignition system in 1999.

Re: 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.0 Engine Swap?
Thanks for the reply. I had a similar deal wiath a '99 4.7. In (I think) 2003 they changed to a different tone wheel, attached internally to the crankshaft.
I'm guessing it's the same kinda deal with the 4.0? And, I'm guessing that the "non Grand" Cherokee's have a distributor? I've got a Salvage Yard near me that has several good 4.0's, but all out of Cherokee's.

Re: 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.0 Engine Swap?
You do not want the one with the 4.7,not very reliable.Known for head gaskets and valve seats popping out of the cylinder heads which are automatically junkThe 4.7 is very expensive to fix and it is more money used,$1,500.00 used.I believe all 1999 and up 4.0s have the coil on plug ignition system
