Trouble gasing up!!!

Can someone help me? There is aparrently something wrong with my '01 1.6L auto trans Accent. When gasing up at the pump the nozzle repeatedly shuts off as if I am topping it off. I can be on empty and it will still do this. Been to many diff pumps with same results. I am the only one who drives this car and it has the lock gas door so I don't think there is something stuck in the line between the interface and the tank. I could be wrong.
Any ideas on things to check?
Spending 15mins at the pump to pump $10 worth of gas it getting old! LOL

It's a really common problem. It happens because people try to overfill the tank, it saturates the charcoal canister with gas, and the little charcoal pellets float up into the EVAP system and render it FUBAR. The "recommended" solution is to replace the canister, the canister valve, the filler tube valves (depending on your model) and the purge valve. Then clean out all the EVAP hoses. It's an expensive, difficult, and time consuming fix.

I have the same problem, and I was pouring out handfuls of charcoal from my EVAP hoses for months. I finally eliminated most of the problem by covering the canister openings with mesh and cleaning out the hoses. I still have a hard time getting the last few gallons in the tank, but it's light-years better than it was.

Where is the canister and these hoses located so I can try your technique? Or can you give me some direction? It is an old vehicle and I am very reluctant to put allot of money into fixing this problem if I don't have to. thank you.

It's a black square plastic box mounted underneath between the bumper and the gas tank. You'll see two rubber hoses attached to it. If you remove the larger hose, you'll pour out a handful of charcoal. If you leave the hose off all together, you can fill gas till the cows come home, but it will eventually throw a trouble code.

For a while I did this little trick where I left the hose connected but loose enough to pull off. When I went for gas, I'd pull the hose off, fill up the gas, then put the hose back on. It eliminated the trouble code that way.

I know what you are talking about. I will do this method until I can find some kind of mesh to put there like you did.
This is the problem by the way. When i gently squeeze the hose right before the black box I can feel the charcoal pellets.

My gf's 2002 Accent has this same problem- going to check hoses for charcoal when weather warms up a bit this weekend- just got mild frostbite trying to fill her tank from hell w/o gloves!!!

What type of mesh do you suggest? Something like metal window screen work or does it need to be very fine?
