Sounds like a gauge cluster problem seeing how they both went out. The speedo and the tach are no way connected besides in the cluster. The tach comes off the distributor and teh speedo comes off the tranny. I would double check your cluster because it sounds like thats the problem.

Than since your not getting a signal from the tach i would look to the distributor. For the speedo, make sure that the cable is all the way pushed into the tranny and that the clip is holding it in.

check the fuse for your turn lights. i blew that one by mistake, and drove around for a while thinking i blew my cluster out. but the speedo is mechanical, so even with that fuse burnt out you should still get the speedo, check cable by taking it outta the tranny and spin it while someone watches your cluster. if it moves the numbers or the needle, your speedo is fine, just make sure the cable is seated into the tranny all the way. also, are the other gauges working? like gas and temp? if they arent, its that fuse.
