2001 4L starter relay

I have a starting issue. Battery good and fully charged. After some study appears to be starter relay. Chilton's manual shows it to be between battery and distribution box. Not there. Could it be attached to the starter itself. Is it a user replaceable item or do you have to replace the whole starter.

Just wonder if it is part of the general engine module or the start security system. I don't want to replace the starter if that's not the problem.

If you don't hear a click when you engage the starter with the key, the problem is indeed the relay. If it makes a racket when you engage the key it's the solenoid. If it clicks just once the problem is the starter.

It makes racket when you try to start. There is no solenoid on the front fender. It appears the solenoid is on the starter. Is this a replaceable part or do you have to replace the entire starter. I haven't pulled the starter but I think I'll do that this morning.

The solenoid is part of the starter. I would replace the starter which will have a new solenoid on it. This is the best thing to do as the starter is probably on it's way out, too.

Well I replaced the starter with solenoid attached and still same issue. Battery shows 13V on two different meters, one analog other digital. There is not relay on the fender. One of the red wires from the battery goes directly to the electrical distribution box on the firewall with no relays in line at all. Frustrating.

What I always tell others to do when faced with a similar prombem. Check the battery cables and clean. I had pulled the + cable and it appeared ok. The - cable appeared ok too. Cleaned both on advise from a local mechanic I know and problem solved. Couldn't believe that the small amount of corrosion could cause such a problem. Oh well..........
