Question radiator overheating

I have a 94 Firebird that is overheating. I have replaced the radiator, heat sensor, fan motor, cap. I need to fix the overflow tank due to leakage. I have a minor leak somewhere back on the motor. I have used some Bardols alum stop leak. It seemed to fix that leak. Of course now my thermostat is slow and keeps the temp around 185-210 degrees. Once in awhile it may hit the 220-240 range. Just long enough to set off the check engine light. Then the temp goes down to the 185 range. I am sure there is not a bad head gasket problem. The oil is clean, and there is no steam or anything like that coming out of the exhaust. it is basically boiling off my antifreeze in about 3-4 days. Any ideas?

Re: radiator overheating

May need to replace the thermostat and are you bleeding off the excess air after you fill the radiator? And what type of coolant are you using? Not dexcool I hope...

Re: radiator overheating

Bleeding the excess air seems about right. Check the obvious..... radiator cap.

Smile Re: radiator overheating

Thanks everyone. I changed the radiator cap and had the same problems. I drilled (2) 3/32 holes in thermostat and installed an aftermarket coolant resivor. It does take a bit longer to get to the 185-190 range due to the positive flow holes. I would say 3-5 minutes. This makes no difference to me as long as it does not overheat. And it is running great now.
