1960 f-100

I have a friend that has a f-100 1960 ford truck, He said that it has to much play in the steering that he can't drive it on the road, Now it has a manual steering gear box on it, he said that he has had it open and didn't see anything wrong with it. Everything under the truck looks good, Hope you ford guys can help, Because i'm a Chevy man.

Test the tie rods and ball joints for play. Inspect the control arm bushings. Check the idler arm for excessive wear. A truck this old you would have problems getting parts for. But, I'm sure the major outlets would be able to get them for you overnight. There is an adjustment on top of the steering gear. Don't over tighten it.

Re: 1960 f-100

Might want to check the king pin bushings for wear If it's a 1960, should have a straight axle front end (jack the front end one side at a time and try to move the wheel up and down. If it has any play, the bushings are worn out. Moving the wheels left and right will tell you if you have play in the steering but not in the king pins. also check the tow in. should be set at almost zero tow in for straight axle. Have seen some trucks towed out to make then drive better. Hope this helps!
