99 Ram 1500..What color antifreeze to use?
I am old school and it confuses me with the differant color anti-freeze/coolant that is being used and why
This is a 1999 model ram 1500 V-8 and not sure what color should be used and if it really makes a differant in that older model. For years I have always used the same green colored Prestone, however several people are telling me I am using the wrong color for Dodge...confused Thanks |

Re: 99 Ram 1500..What color antifreeze to use?
It all depends on your preference anymore. I have a 2001 RAM 1500 318. Dodge uses a red color from the factory. Yellow can be added to either red or green. When my radiator crapped out on me I took it to my local dealer and had them pump it clean and put Green in since it is a lot easier to get in case of an emergency. If you decided to use either green or red just make sure you don't mix them. and I also keep a nice 50/50 mix.

I always get the 50/50 mix. Auto zone told me it doesn't matter what color you use and any color is fine.
I know Oil Stop in California said you have to use the right color that the manufacturer states. People say different things. It gets confusing Last edited by bratt; 10-14-2009 at 02:21 PM. |

I'm using the "mix with anything-easily available" yellow from Advance Auto although I suspect it's at all the chain type auto parts stores.

In my opinion, you are much better off flushing the red stuff out. In time it will eat away any and all gaskets it comes in contact with. The stuff is bad news and highly corrosive. I think the only reason it gets put in from the factory is for job security. They figure most people will take the vehicle to the dealership to have it worked on, so why not make their visits more frequent with gasket problems... right after the warranty is up. Use the green stuff, it's tried and true and was engineered to stop corrosion.
