99 grand am 3400 engine replacement

Ok a friend of mine has a 1999 Grand am 3400 and the engine went out.. She took it to a shop and it sat for months.. The guys there said it was hard for them to find a engine because the 1999 engines were different and she had to find a 1999 3400 engine..and that's was the only one that would work. Doe sit have to come out of a grand am?

I know the mounts are on the side but is that true? That it has to be a 1999 engine. I don't think thats true maybe they didnt wanna fix it becasue even if that is true I just found a 1999 one for 450.00 after looking for only 5 minutes

Re: 99 grand am 3400 engine replacement

Thier are small variances between the 99+ 3.4L's. Though they will all work just need some things from the 99 motor to hook things up and adjust fuel ratios because the newer 3.4s in GAs have bigger injectors.

And any 99 3.4L will work. They used them in several models, which the garage should already know.

Yes any 99 should work. Pontiac or chevy , like the Malibu.
Also some mini-vans have the 3.4L.

I think the 2000+ will work, you just need to swap out the lower intake with the 99 intake/injectors/fuel rails.

Good Hunting!

2000 and up will bolt up,I have done them changing the injectors, upper intake, egr valve and egr tube.It would not hurt to take off the intake and replace the intake gaskets at the same time.

Re: 99 grand am 3400 engine replacement

I just finished a couple weeks ago putting my 2000 se motor into a 99 gt, both 3.4. The only changes I had to deal with is...1. the fuel rail and injector have to be changed because of the big electrical plug in is different. And you also have to change the intake because the 2000 has longer fuel injectors. 2. The 2000 has a little pump that pumps fresh air into the exhaust the 99 doesn't. If I had it out again I would take all the gold tubing off the sides of the motor and cap everything off at the block to make more room around the motor. Didnt learn this till I had it in. 3 And also the camshaft sensor wires. The wire came out the rightside of the power steering pump for the camshaft sensor. It wasnt easy fishing those under the steering pump to the left side so the plug in would reach on the 99 .After I had Everything in and put together I realized that one.

Hope this helps!!
Steve
