Unhappy 99' GTP power steering issue

The power steering goes in and out, It works most of the time on right turns.....And never on left turns, it's gradually gotten worse. It all started after a bunch of front end work and we've checked the hoses they all seem fine..Any ideas about what might be going on?

Re: 99' GTP power steering issue

Sounds like a rack and pinion issue to me.

By front end work you mean......?

Re: 99' GTP power steering issue

The rack and pinion's been replaced twice this year.. But it all started after the second one was put in. We've also replaced the tie rods and wheel bearings. Do you think the rack and pinion is in wrong? or a bad part?

Re: 99' GTP power steering issue

NO, I doubt the rack is in wrong. Its probably bad. What brand is it? I went through 2 NAPA ones before I went and got a stock used one from an 03 GP from a salvage yard with a lifetime replacement warrenty. I hope yours is a delco and under warrenty.

Or else you could jack up the front end, remove the wheels, unhook the tir rod ends, and turn the spindles/strut assemplies by hand to feel for a binding ball joint or strut mount.

Re: 99' GTP power steering issue

ok we'll try that. What do you think the chances of it having variable effort steering and that being the problem, I just can't seem to find out if the 99's have them.

Re: 99' GTP power steering issue

I'm pretty sure 99's is when it became standard and no longer an option. If it is an issue with the variable assist, its all intergrated with the rack.

Re: 99' GTP power steering issue

Been there, done that. Don't do it a 4th time. Stick with stock delco replacement parts.
