changing out the steering wheel

can anyone tell me what i have to do to change the steering wheel in my 05 impala,mine is a base and am changing out the steering wheel to put a leather wrapped one in,will my center piece where the airbag is too fit in the ls wheel,do i disconnect the battery and what else is inside the column that has to be unhooked

The airbag will fit. I would not only disconnect the battery but also pull the airbag fuses.
The clockspring will need to be disconnected also.
