Question 2003 Taurus what's this part??

while trying to do some maintenance on my car i noticed there's an elbow-like component coming out of the left side of the air intake that appears to be cracked and some sort of oil is all over the hose. at first i thought it may be the PCV valve but the Haynes manual says for my "U" OHV engine it should be on the right side of the air intake. i couldn't find a part looking like that while searching for PCV related parts on autozone or other similar sites. help is appreciated!

Thanks!

From what I can see in the photo, that appears to connect to a valve cover, I would guess that it is the PCV elbow.

Sometimes manuals reference everything off of a person sitting in the car, maybe that's what they did in this case? Which valve cover is that coming out of? If the cover at the front of the car, that would be the RIGHT cylinder bank.

thanks for your reply! all the photos are taken from the passenger's side and it's a bit behind the alternator on the opposite side of the air filter ducts, looking towards the firewall. i've found this part that looks like it but kcv-116 is supposed to fit on OHC engines, not OHV like mine is...

the picture in the Haynes manual looks totally different than this and the PCV is supposed to run into a horizontal hose, but this hose is vertical. the manual says: "on ohv engines the pcv valve is located in the rear valve cover, toward the right side of the engine compartment. on ohc engines the pcv valve is installed in an oil separator tube attached to the lower part of the intake manifold". from this description it appears to be an OHC engine

Have you tried the dealership to see what they come up with? The part probably isn't much more from the dealership than getting it online, especially since you'd be able to verify it's correct and return it if not with no added shipping.

i've found some online posts of people having the same hose problem with dealers asking $250 i pulled the hose out and cleaned it. it's about 5" long and attached to the PCV valve EV228 (which motorcraft lists for OHV engines). the valve is good (rattles) and neither murray's nor autozone had the part in store (special order only). so for now i just used some electrical tape to seal the torn elobow. it runs fine...

here's a picture of my whole engine, the PCV is on the left side to the rear. according to the Haynes manual it appears to be DOHC because of the PCV position and the horizontal spark coil pack. but the wire order listed in the Haynes is not matching either OHV or OHC engines i'm starting to wonder if this "U" engine isn't some sort of transition year oddity between the old style and new style. then again maybe my post will help someone else who's as confused as i was.

Re: 2003 Taurus what's this part??

Based on the position of the spark plugs and the narrow valve cover, that definitely isn't the DOHC engine. The Haynes manuals often cover a wide range of model years, so their photos and possibly even their descriptions may not be completely accurate for all models covered by the single manual.

Thanks for posting what you've found and what a (temporary) fix is. At least you'll know where to look when the symptoms return.

that is the pcv valve. The pcv valve comes complete with the hose. You can only get it from the ford dealer. genuine part only. around $17.00 - $24.00 depending on which dealer you go to.

Re: 2003 Taurus what's this part??

I have both parts for my 2002, the long one with a pinch clamp is for a 24V Duratec. The short one is for the "U" engine, dealer referred to part as "Peace Pipe", had to think about that since don't smoke. It was $23 and plugged right in. I tried electrical tape, but oil loosened it quickly and check engine light came on. Once installed, took eight restarts and check engine light went out.
