Disconnected air hose

Changing the air filter on my '08 Prix today. There's a rubber air hose about 1" in diameter that comes out of the air cleaner box, travels about 8" downward to a black cannister looking thing. The hose was completely disconnected at the cannister. The cannister apparently draws clean air in from the filter box, and sends it out through another hose. This disconnection means it was sucking in unfiltered air.

What's the cannister? Charcoal? It looks like the hose was disconnected for a while, but I can't say I noticed a difference in how the car ran. Thoughts?
