Exclamation Speedhunters McLaren F1 Topics.

As you will have seen on a couple of posts here, BMW Feature Month on Speedhunters and were just wrapping this up (even thought its now Oct 1st).

Here are a summary of McLaren related Posts. John Brooks, one of our contributors worked for GTC and DPR as photographer while at Sutton Images. You'll probably recognise a large number of images from books and magazines, while a few are new to me.

Incredible photos! They could make another photo book on the McLarens.

Thanks for sharing that!

Re: Speedhunters McLaren F1 Topics.

BTW - I learned at least one interesting new thing from reading your '95 Retrospective.

The fact that the paint scheme for #01R's LeMans livery was done at the request of Motokazu Sayama to match his Mercedes SL was an unique fact. I especially like it because seems to lend even more credibility to the theory that the Black/Grey F1 road car which has been spotted in Japan has a direct connection to him. It is believed to be chassis #043.

The reports from both you and John evoked memories of sitting on the couch with friends back in the mid '90s watching truncated versions of the BPR and FIA GT races on Speedvision. Some of John's behind the scenes comments were enlightening too. All around a great effort from several folks and definitely worth everyone's time to read.

John added some great images to match up with your text today! Now I'm waiting impatiently for the ones that match up with tomorrow's piece. I was hoping for more pics of the Marlboro liveried GTRs, but I read his comments about being banned from Zhuhai in '96 by Barth and Ratel for something he wrote about the impending decline of their series. Funny the kind of politics that work their way into the racing world sometimes.

Re: Speedhunters McLaren F1 Topics.

This is what he wrote in his '97 Retrospective - Part 1 referring to the earlier 1996 BPR season:

Quote:
It was clear to all on the inside that the BPR could not continue in the existing format, indeed I wrote an internet column at the time saying just that and a bit more, and got banned from the final race of the season in China for my pains. I did not think anyone would actually bother to read my article, much less care what an obscure photographer thought. To their credit both Jurgen and Stephane later admitted I was right at the time and we all get along fine now.
I took that to mean he wasn't allowed to attend the event, but perhaps he made the trip and snapped a few pics during practice and qualifying and was only barred from the race?

Re: Speedhunters McLaren F1 Topics.

Must be a change of policy, as the first photos I saw from that place surfaced in 2002 and there have been very few since. I've read several posts around the 'net of people touring the facility and cameras not being allowed in.

I'm not complaining if you're right btw...

Re: Speedhunters McLaren F1 Topics.

The "no photos" policy still applies,

But, not to the lucky gentleman who sent me a present in the post yesterday Top man.
