Oil leak?

92 Grand Am Se with the 3.3 V6. It's leaking oil between the engine and transmission on the driver's side. I figure this is a main seal leak right? This is my first front wheel drive car so not for sure about what could be leaking. If so what's all involved fixing this? Is this a do-it-yourself job or proffessional?

Also I started the car the other day and was somewhat cool. It was smoking a whiteish color but figured it was condensation. Wife noticed it as well. I had it just idling and wasn't running bad so if you have a bad head gasket won't it run crapy? I started it the next day and there was no smoke at all?? So if it is a head gasket wouldn't do it all the time?? It didn't smell like antifreeze either so I'm thinking not but want to make sure????

Re: Oil leak?

Yes that is the rear main seal and is a PITA to change.

You either have to drop the trany or pull the engine.
If you do the rear main seal I'd plan on doing the front because after you replace the rear the front will start leaking soon.

Crap, that blows. Maybe there is something out there that can be added to the crankcase that would swell the seal???
