loud clunking in the front end
I have an 88 p/u 4x4 on the way home from work the front right side made a howling sound. I parked the truck for the weekend and backed up fine but when I turned it seemed to bind and clunk really bad. to the point of dragging the front tire. I had a bad boot on my cv axel so I replaced it thinking it was that and no luck. still does it. Thinking it was only on turns I tried to go forward straight and after 20' of so it clunked hard and whined as I reached 15 MPH or so. I was told hub assembly by one and the differential by another. Any advise?
Thanks Don

Re: loud clunking in the front end
If you had a bad CV boot allowing dirt and debris to get into the CV joint it's probably that.

Re: loud clunking in the front end
I did replace the axle shaft and its still doing it. Were you referring to the hub assembly?

Re: loud clunking in the front end
Check CV joints carefully. Also, jack wheel up under lower a-frame, and wiggle wheel. If it has play, then probably a bad bearing. Also, check fluid in diff (drain it and fill with fresh fluid).
