97 Jetta New timing belt stripped

I just replaced a timing belt on a 1997 Jetta 2.0L. I drove it for about a week and a half and it was running good and then all of a sudden it just squealed, backfired and died. The first thing i did was pull the timing belt cover and noticed tha the teeth were all missng and the belt looked like it had moved out on the cam cog. Do these cars have any problems with the cam bearing going bad allowing the belt to move out slightly, and why would it strip all of the teeth off the belt. Someone please give me some insight. Im not a rookie at replacing timing belts, but this one is a head scratcher.

Thanks
