5R55E Transmission Trouble

I was driving my ranger when suddenly it stopped moving. It was shifting smoothly with no trouble at all. I got it towed home and checked the fluid in the tranny. It was black. There doesn't appear to be any metal filings in it and the transmission doesn't grind or anything when I put it in to gear. It's the 5R55E transmission with 4-wheel drive. Valve body? Transmission itself? Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: 5R55E Transmission Trouble

Change the fluid and filter first. If that doesn't help probably the valve body is bad. That type of AT has been plagued with bad valve bodies.

Re: 5R55E Transmission Trouble

I had a very similiar problem with mine. It ended up being a large plate with a paper backed gasket in between the valvebody and tranny base that went bad. I bought a new one at a dealership for $40 dollars. That doesn't mean it's your answer but it might be worth looking into. Hope this helps.
