High Mileage

I have a 1995 CVPI. It was used in a small town, probably never used in a car chase. So, Im guessing they were, for the most part, "easy miles". It has 268,xxx miles on it. When I bought it, my dad was panicking. I know the guy before me had itr for six months, and rode the piss out of it, but he did the normal maintanence to it, and Ive done alot of maintanence, and am getting a new tranny installed next week.
How much life do you think is left in this baby? Its not knocking, burning oil, ect.
Thanks for all your help, lots of great info here.

Re: High Mileage

Completely depends on where it was located. In the dry states, it can easily do 300k. In the snow belt, it will not last as long due to rust from salt. By the way, although it may have not been any chases, it has probably idles alot. That is harsh on the engine, too. The oil gets hotter and the timing chain guides and tensioners wear out. The 95 timing chain guides/tensioners were tougher than the ones used in 98 and up, so you should be good even with that mileage, though.

If it's good and the body is in good condition, it may last another 100k. Additionally, since you're getting a new transmission installed, if you want some firmer shifts and elongate the life of the clutches, consider doing a J-mod on the transmission. It's relatively easy as it only requires dropping the valve body, enlarging a few holes in the separator plate, and changing/removing a few springs if desired. Cheap to do, too.

Re: High Mileage

Wow, thanks so much for the fast reply.
Yes, the body is in great shape, and nothing major has happened to the engine. Just small things. Valves, pulleys, ect.

Re: High Mileage

Well then I'd say enjoy the car. IF you do hear a noise coming from the timing cover on the front of the engine, then that would probably be the only thing that I may expect to be a problem on that car. It would sound like a sewing machine at idle and that would indicate worn timing chain guides and tensioners.
