tranny question.

I've got a 92 gmc xcab 4X4 350 engine with a blown tranny. What tranny can I swap in? turbo 350-400 or anything better than the crap that's in it?

Re: tranny question.

You will lose fuel mileage if you convert to a turbo 350 or 400.I have heard of one done to a 1997 and lost fuel mileage bigtime switching back to the 4L60E.A 700R4 with a K on the bellhousing is the stronger case which come out of the 4x4s

Re: tranny question.

What I need to know is can I swap out the 700r for something stronger? This tranny has 25,000 miles on a rebuild and is pooched. I use it for hauling and if I can't get a tranny that will stand up to it then the truck is down the road. I've heard the 700r is the worst tranny built by gm and from what I've seen that seems to be true. Or did I just get a lemon? I paid 1800 for the whole truck and have been given two seperate quotes one for a rebuild and one for a new tranny, both over 2500 dollars.

Re: tranny question.

The 700R4 is a good transmission, only thing I change a lot in them are the sunshells breaking or stripping the teeth out.You can,you are going to lose fuel mileage since the turbo 350 and 400 do not have overdrive.Gear vendors sells an overdrive unit for the turbo 350 and 400,$2,500.00 and the cheaper way is the 700R4 since it has overdrive
