Front Wheel Bearings--99 escort
I know the bearings on this car are pressed in (and I don't have the hydraulic press to do that). It looks like there are whole hub assemblies available, which I assume have the bearings already pressed into place. Would I need any special tools to replace the assembly?
Thanks. Bob |

Re: Front Wheel Bearings--99 escort
No special tools needed to take the hub off. You can get a tie rod separator to take the tie rod loose, but I always use a big hammer and rap the sleeve the tie rod is pressed into. It momentarily relaxes the fitting and the tie rod will pop out. Sometimes the drive shaft splines are difficult to get loose from the hub. If you want, you can take the hub to a machine shop and they will R&R the bearing for you for a nominal price.

Re: Front Wheel Bearings--99 escort
Had to use an air hammer to free the drive axle from the hub. Other than that, should be a pretty quick job. Make sure that at least one CV Axle is firmly inserted into the transmission at all times.
