New track times this week

Well guys after about 5 months I have finally got the car ready for the track again. If yall remember I was slipping the clutch last time back in March this year. Since then, the clutch has been replaced, headgasket, and a few other things. Anyways I finally got the car running really strong, I have meth working perfectly now and hopefully it wont give me any more problems. I still check it everyday before I start the car to make sure the motor isin't going to hydrolock. Car was tuned up to 24psi with meth cutting on at 13psi with a M10 nozzel. The car is currently set on 23psi (it made more power on 23 than 24psi for some reason) and is still running a tad rich but its not that big of a deal.

So we will be taking a trip to the track this wednesday night to see what it will run now. Hoping for a 12s pass at about 114mph. I know the car could hit 12s easily if it could get some traction in first and second. Hopefully I will get some good videos of the car and dont have any problems with it.

Re: New track times this week

So much for that trip to the track. Turned out to be a great night to go, it was a cooler night and the weather was perfect. It was calling for rain all day and it held off. Anyways the car was running great all day, got ready for my first run, dropped tire pressure down to 22psi in the front tires. I launched the car pretty easy and didn't push second to hard to see how the track was holding. Got on it hard in third and forth, went to pick up my slip and the lady had messed up the timing thing so my run didn't register. No big deal Ill get plenty more tonight, went threw the log and tried to update the fuel map but MS was screwing up and couldn't get it to work for some reason. I should have known this was a sign. Anyways on the second run I launched the car pretty hard and really got on it hard in second... well the rpms shoot up high and I figure the tires were spinning so I backed off a little but they kept spinning till I hit third.. rpms shoot up to 7k immediately... coasted the rest of the way down the track. So the clutch is slipping again... FML Also coolant has now found someplace to leak from and is on my upper radiator hose. Not dripping just a little, thinking thats the rad. cap leaking hopefully. So I let the car cool off some, take it for a drive and it seems to be holding boost fine. So I try to go for one more run and see how it goes.. Launch the car easy off the line, hit second and didnt get on it all the way. Clutch is still holding at this point, hit third and put it to the floor and the rpms shoot back up.. Clutch is deffinately gone. Along with that run came more coolant spraying out and a blown out exhaust turbo before the turbo. So endded up breaking the car and didn't even get to see what it ran that one good run.

A little disapointed with meth also. Ambient was around 80*F, intake temps at the start were around 104*, after 2nd 106*, after 3rd 108*, after 4th 114*?? WTF I know it was working because the temps would have risen a lot more than that had meth not been on. Intercooler may had been a little on the hot side to begin with since we did drive an hour there and only let the car cool for 20-25 minutes.

The car did make the drive back which is a good thing, it just sounds like ass when you drive it. I actually made it worse by doing a 3rd gear pull getting on the interstate at 23psi. The clutch held fine but it made the leak even worse. Now I have to drive it back and forth to school till I get it fixed.. Sorry for the long post

That really sucks. How long before you will have another chance to run it?

Re: New track times this week

The track is open for test and tune every wednesday night almost year around. I think I may just drop the boost to 18-20psi and go back in a month or so just to practice launching the car right now. Its going to be a few months before I get another clutch in there so at least I wouldn't be off the track to long.

Re: New track times this week

That sucks you didnt get a good run in. Wonder why it makes more power on 23psi than 24psi? Turbo out of the effeciency range at that point? You running it on the 17 inch rims? What tires do you have and the traction/treadwear on them? Also, I know you are partial to the ZOOM brand products....but why dont you just go with another brand, tried and true clutch? There are alot of fast 420a's out there.....so I know someone makes some hardcore clutches.

Re: New track times this week

It could be a lot of thing playing into that, Im still on 2.5" exhaust, turbo has the td05 wheel. And about the clutch mainly cost is why I haven't gone with something else. Any clutch out there thats going to hold this power is around 500$ which I dont have right now. I actually was wanting to put an act pressure plate in but they dont make one for my car. The car was holding 23psi on the way home so it was just to much for it when the tires where let out and I was really getting on it in second gear.

Also another reason why I put this one in it was because it was a brand new material zoom was testing out and this was a test disc to see how it held up. This clutch was the only single disc clutch with the science friction material and no one really knows what it can do.

And yea Im still on 17"x7.5 rims wrapped with 225/45/17 sumitomo HTR Z 3 at 22psi in the front. I want to do a run at 40psi to see if there is a difference in trap speed. I felt like the car was a little slow on the top end with the tires that deflated.

Yea I got that new pressure plate for about $20.I really thought it was going to work out but I guess not. That pressure plate is just too weak.

500 once is less than 200 3 times.

Damn, sorry to hear about that.

Ill be interested to know which clutch setup you do end up choosing...as im going to be replacing mine during the motor build.

Would like to know which setup works good for you.

Re: New track times this week

I think I have got this clutch problem figured out. I am going to put the 2400lb plate back in. The problem I had with releasing will be fixed. The problem was that the pressure plate needed more throw than a stock pp and the stock hydrolics couldn't provide enough movement. After a little research I found out that the stock 420a slave cylinder has a 13/16 bore, the 3kgt slave has a bore 11/16. So using the stock master cylinder and the 3kgt slave I should be getting about 100 thousands of an inch more travel. If I calculated everything right, the fork has a 1.5 to 1 ratio which will give me 150 thousands more travel at the TOB which should be plenty to release that pressure plate. I already have a 3kgt slave sitting at the house Im going to put in and test this theory out before I go threw all that work and this doesn't work again.

Re: New track times this week

Update on the new slave. First I need to clarify some info, the 420a motor has a 1:1 fork, the 4g63 has the 1:1.5. Anyways I measured the stock slave to move .344", the 3kgt has .517". The clutch need about .450" to release so I should have plenty or travel for that clutch to work. Also the 3kgt slave bolted right up all I needed was 2 bolts to hold it on since it is not threaded like the stock one. Even was able to use the 3kgt slave rod. The clutch pedal was a little bit stiffer with the smaller slave but I will just have to deal with it. Hopefully it wont be to bad with the heavier plate.
