Heater Hoses

In the constant pursuit of "preventative maintenance" I have done another oil change and finally got the differential fluid/gasket done. My next project that I am studying now are the hoses, including the heater hoses.

My question: Is there anything that I need to be especially concerned about in changing the heater hoses. They are the originals, so I am sure they are on there pretty good. I will probably have to carefully cut pieces to get them off. But, what the heck are the plastic things on the ends of the heater core. I see that one is black and the other is white (yellow!). Are those pressed onto the inlet/outlet tubes of the core? Are those replaceable? I am concerned that they will disintegrate in my hands when I mess with them.

As always, any information is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Matt
