1998 explorer sport starts the stalls

my 1998 explorer sport 4.0L pushrod engine ran fine last night when i came home. this morning i went to start it and it starts then dies. sometimes it will start the idle will bump up a second and the die.
Does any body have a clue as to what this could be.

Re: 1998 explorer sport starts the stalls

Sounds like the engine is leaning out (hence the race in the idle speed prior to stalling). I think you either have a large vacuum leak or weak fuel pressure.

Had any service been performed on the vehicle just prior to this issue starting? Maybe the air filter was checked and the intake air tubing is not properly secured, allowing a large amount of unmetered air into the throttle body, or maybe the fuel pump is on its way out causing low fuel pressure.

When's the last time a tune up was performed?
