Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
My engine died on me and now have to replace. Can anyone tell me what the going price for a remanufactured long block engine for a 98 Chevy Venture plus labor would be? I have been quoted a price of $3400.00. The price seems pretty high, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks |

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
I found this one on eBay. Looking around the Internet there isn't many companies selling 3.4s for these vans. Jaspers doesn't post prices on their site, rather directing their customers to their installers near them.Another option is to call some of your local parts stores to get an idea of costs and available warranties.

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
Thanks for the links. I see all sorts of prices for remanned Engines. I talked to Jaspar and they wanted $2400.00 just for the long block engine and it is 10 hours labor for installation. If you check around you can get a remanned for $1300.00 plus shipping. I just don't understand the differences between remanned engines that would cause such a variation in price. I called another repair shop that advertised engine replacement and they wanted $3700.00 for engine and 8 hours labor.
I thought I might post this question in case anyone had previous experience with remans. |

It may be that that the cheaper ones are doing less work/parts/testing than the more expensive ones.

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
Avoid that one on ebay, you waste your time switching the oil pan and timing cover over to the new engine and it is a waste of money.Jasper found out is cheaper to put on the oil pan and timing cover on.Jasper uses the upgraded intake gaskets made out of metal instead of the ones made out plastic. The auto parts stores remans are to stay away from too and I heard so many horror stories getting warranty work. The warranty sucks on them, you take the vehicle to one of their places for warranty work.Plus cheap parts are used in auto parts stores remans such as pistons made in China, bearings made in Israel.Jasper stands behind thier remans and does upgrades to the 3400.One is align bore the cam journals with upgraded cam bearings,3400s are know for eating camshafts and Jasper found out the cam journals in the block were casted offset.Jasper also has the best waranty, 3 year 100,000 mile warranty and you take it to any Jasper dealer for the warranty work.

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
I did a quick search for a GM reman. engine on www.crateenginedepot.com . It looks like you could get one for $2400.00 with a 3yr/100,000 mile war. It looked like this price was 15% of list price. If your a good BS'er ask a GM parts dealer for a discount, if you ask alot of times they'll give you a break. Keep in mind the engine should be installed by a ASE Certified shop. And new water pump, plugs, wires, ect, ect,.... for the warr. to be any good. But if you have any problem with the engine itself you can take it to any GM dealer for repair parts/labor.

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
I did read GM reman engines are junk.I read of one case the crank broke on one and it was a 4.3 out of a Blazer.Jasper is cheaper than GM on reman engines.Jasper is the only one that fixes the problem with eating of the camshafts for the 3400 including the 3100s by align boring the cam journals in the block.

As with anything there are those cases of a remanufactured part not holding up over time. And if you look hard enough you can always find the good and bad in anything. I was just trying to show you a possible option with a good warr.

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
I have never seen a Jasper reman fail yet and GM probaly uses the plastic intake gaskets in their remans.Jasper threw every plastic intake gasket out and replaced them with the upgraded intake gaskets made out metal made by Fel Pro.Dorman,Fel Pro and Victor Renz sell the upgraded intake gaskets.Dorman is the cheapest with every gasket,o rings and new intake bolts in their kit.

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
I have one of these vans too. I bought a reman long block from ATK for $1600 but had to switch over my timing cover, valve covers, oil pan, and intake. I did pay a little extra to buy the new upgraded intake gaskets which are way better. I could have bought a complete GM reman engine complete with all covers and pans for $2200 from a local dealer. It all depends if you can do some work yourself or if you pay to have it done and how much time you can go without your vehicle. I now have 60,000 miles on my ATK reman and it runs strong. Good luck!

Re: Cost of a remanufactured engine for 1998 Chevy Venture
Thanks for the replies. I couldn't understand all the different prices on remans, your posts helped alot. My engine died while I was travellng so I was pretty much limited as to my choices. I contacted a local dealership and they said the cost would be $3000.00 or so just for the engine. Contacted several other places that wanted $3,700.00 for engine and installation. I wound up having a local shop who does business with CME install the engine. They said that they had good results with CME's remans.
In this case Hind sight will be 20-20 vision. I'll just have to see how this all plays out. If I can get another Year or so out of my car without any major repairs I will be happy. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed. |
