K&n air intake question. Will this work?

Hello, I have a K&N air filter (not the whole cold air intake system) on my 96' Tahoe. Here is the question. Instead of buying the intake system, can I just take the air filter box cover off? Won't I get the same results as having the cold air intake system? I don't see a difference besides the shape of the filter. Thanks for any info or suggestions on this!

if you live in a cold icy road salt area,,I don't recommend these cold air intakes...the element is exposed to excessive debris, that in the winter is bad...

what I did was drill 1/4inch holes in the bottom of the air box..this not only increases air to the filter ,but drains out the snow that has melted, after getting injested into the box...

also I place RAT wire, to protect the air filter element from rodent damage on the air inlet to the box.

if you live in an area that has 100 deg temps that cold air intake is a good idea...colder air gives better power...but too cold is bad....just as too hot is bad...

The factory system is a cold air system. If you take the lid off you're just allowing hot engine compartment air into the intake.
