98 explorer loss of power stering and over heating at same time

driving back from a rafting trip(about 30-40 minute drive) halfway back the battery light came on(charge light read normal) then started losing powerstering. then check engine light came on. made it home...could hardly turnthe wheel to park it.....turned engine off and could hear the coolant boiling in the overflow tank. temp gauge never read hot? left it overnight. started it up in the morn no problem.still no power stearing. weird that it would overheat and lose powerstearing at the same time and run fine. PLEASE HELP!!!! hopeing its just a senser or something.

Had same issue before. Ended up being a worn out water pump.

Sounds to me like your serpentine belt broke or is loose. The belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, and water pump. If the belt loses tension or brakes, you will no longer have power steering, a turning water pump, turning radiator cooling fan, and the alternator will stop turning causing the "Batt" indicator to illuminate.
