Attention Gearheads:

I have a differential question so you can read on or stop here. I dont get much response from the suburban forum but this is not vehicle specific, more of a general GM question.

I bought a 99 suburban 4wd with a bad rear diff so I swapped in a complete axle assembly with same gears (3.73) BUT this donor axle has an open diff. The guy said it was from a 95 tahoe HE THINKS. It had the same sway bar everything bolted right into my suburban, it works great.

Now I have an Open Diff in my 4wd, and I want a powertrax or aussie locker in it. How do I go about ordering one of these since i dont know the exact specs from the donor vehicle? Are these lockers good for general street applications? I live in major snow country and drive unplowed roads occasionally. I like the idea of these simple lockers so I dont have to remove the carrier or pinion etc.

Please reply with tips or suggestions.

I have had no issues with the eaton locking dif. you must however break in the dif when new the first 1,ooomi. then change/cleanout the diff housing..

break in proceedure is no long high speed operation..drive 50mi then wail for diff to cool down..no towing or hauling ...

the gear teeth need be hardened properly by this operation..if the diff gets too hot the metal will fracture.

with the correct fluid changes and housing being cleaned this will operate with no problems.
