Painting my Regal
Hi, I've been thinking about repainting my Buick. I wasn't sure where to put this thread but I thought this would be a good start.
Anyway, I bought a 1993 Buick Regal exactly 1 year ago for 500$. It had 175K miles on it. Performance wise it is a amazing car, even if its only a 3.1L engine. It shifts very smooth and accelerates nice for a big car. It's had some issues, all of which were easy and cheap to fix (well, the turn signal switch was $80. )However, the paint... It's HORRIBLE. It was a bad color to start with, that aqua green sun faded into a more pukeish green/blue. It's peeling everywhere, especially the trunk that looks like someone used a cheese grater on it. The roof I had to emergency repaint with spray paint because almost all its paint had come off and it was rusting all over. It's peeling again. I live in Florida, no carport or anything so rusting/UV damage is insane. My plastic grills I had over my speakers disintegrated in about 6 months. I need to get new grills before my speakers disintegrate too. ![]() I don't want to get rid of it though. I'm a college student, unemployed and living with my dad. I don't have more then 800$ invested into it, including the cost of the car itself. It runs so nice, I just want it to look good too. So I want to repaint the entire car gloss black. So I read this: http://www.instructables.com/id/The-...-paint-your-c/ It seems doable and I got 100$ stashed away for this project. The only issue I have is time. I have to go to college 4 days a week and this car is my only way to get there. So I have to drive it around while I'm painting it. Anyway, I have a plan I think and I'd like you guys to look it over and tell me if its good or bad. 1. I need to sand it to the metal, get the rust off, and use primer on all the metal surfaces. Everywhere the paint has already come off you can see the metal. I think that would be better then trying to use the old factory primer/paint work thats still there. 2. I'm going to paint it one section at a time. Instead of doing one coat over the entire car. Example: I'll redo the trunk, all the way to a finished paint job. Then do the hood. Then the doors, the hood after that, ect. Maybe if the trunk goes well I'll start multiple panels at once because what I'm thinking of sounds like it'll take a long time. 3. I have to paint it outside. I can't get around that. Hopefully any bugs or bits of sand can be sanded out like another how-to I read mentioned. I'd like to try the roller idea because I have a lot more experience at that style of painting. I've painted sheds, bumpers, bikes and other stuff with brushes and foam rollers. Anyway, any comments or advice would be deeply appreciated. If you got a better suggestion of how to paint my car I'm willing to hear that too. |
