Throttle position sensor 1990

The 1990 1500 2WD Suburban I bought new now has 450,000 miles and the 383 is mostly going strong.

Had my mechanic troubleshoot and fix an electrical problem. He also says he discovered that I need a new throttle position sensor, the old one has a burned spot on its linear rheostat and is sending no signals. Probably true, the idle at stoplights has been rough lately and mileage is off a bit.

In my experience, these kinds of components are fairly simple to install.

But Bubba says they need to be calibrated and checked for proper voltage output, and his estimate is $375. Sounds like dealer-level bend-over territory to me.

Before I tell him go ahead, has anyone been through this, how much was the OEM or aftermarket part, and how many hours labor? Thanks.

Re: Throttle position sensor 1990

TPS for a 350 is about $40 I dont now your eng cause 383 is not GM 1990 even had diesel. If you have normal eng TPS is held on your TB by two screws and on 350 they are not adjustable.I dont know your skill level but this job is not that hard.p/s tps has nothing to do with your lights it can effect idle.the 454 eng still two screws and not adjustable but apx$47 you can look up at advanceautoparts web site. For me to replace that part apx 10 mins.

Re: Throttle position sensor 1990

I have the factory services manuals for 1990. TPS is not adjustable on the 5.7L or 7.4L.

www.rockauto.com lists the AC Delco TPS at around $80.

$375 sounds a little steep to me for just replacing the TPS.

The shop in question is usually quite reasonable, but I suspect Bubba had an RV payment to meet! Thank you for your helpful advice.
