93 Sable rear speaker replacement

I am trying to replace the rear speakers on my 93 Sable. What is the procedure for removing the OEM speakers? Does the rear seat need to come out? I can't seem to find a way to do it from the trunk.

Re: 93 Sable rear speaker replacement

To whom it may concern:

Yes, the back seat must be removed. So does the rear shelf brake light, and a plastic trim piece from one side of the rear window. The rear shelf must be partially removed or slid out to gain access to the speaker. Do NOT attempt to remove the grills from the rear shelf to gain access to the speakers. You still can't reach the speaker screws and it's a real pain to try to reinstall the grills in the rear shelf!

I am replacing the factory 6X8's with a pair of 6X9's. This can be done with only minor mods to the speaker brackets. I believe they will sound better and this gives me a lot more speaker options than finding 6X8's many of which are really 5X7's with a multi-fit bracket holes.

All in all, it's not a terrible job, but more involved than I thought it would be. I wish there was easy access from the trunk!
