Question Totally stumped!!!!

As my boyfriend was driving down the interstate he looked behind him and noticed A LOT of smoke coming from my car... He immediately pulled over and checked it out. There was transmission fluid everywhere - leaking at a pretty fast rate. He noticed it coming out a "tapped in valve???" Maybe with a release cap attatched to the top that moved freely. Bofore he removed the cap this is where he saw the fluuid coming out of. Under the cap it looks like a phillips head screwdriver...??? Fluid does not come out at an idle. Only when you rev the engine- it POURS!!! Please- if ANYBODY has had this experience I am begging for ANSWERS!! Thanks so much!!

Welcome to AF

As Airjer stated, please post your year, engine and trim level (SE, GT, etc...). It will help immensely in giving accurate advice.

Re: Totally stumped!!!!

Sounds like it is pouring pouring out the forward or reverse servo cover. I dont know though. Take a look at this diagram and let us know if you can sort of line up where it is coming from.

Re: Totally stumped!!!!

if the car is a 97, the diagram might or might not be the correct trans depending on if you have the 4t65e or 4t60e. Either way, the diagram would be about the same.

Tell us, how is the fluid level when you pull out the dipstick?

Sounds like if it is towards the top of the trans, it could be coming out the breether.

Re: Totally stumped!!!!

Okay- my boyfriend says fluid level is low now - approxamately 2 quarts are gone after driving about 3 miles. He says that it is the breather but.... Can u replace it? And how can you if you can? Can you bypass it? Can you buy this part form lets say an Advance Auto?? Thanks soooooo much- u have helped me in the past with some sort of fuse problem. Bypassed that and it has been fine since then. BOyfrien is pretty mechanically inclined but its things like this that get us stumped. thanks again for your help!!

Re: Totally stumped!!!!

The breather cannot be plugged or replaced. It should not leak fluid. I do not know why you have trans fluid making its way out, maybe a passage in your trans is blocked. Very odd. Does the trans shift like it should otherwise?

Re: Totally stumped!!!!

Possible bad tranny side cover gasket/channel plate gasket. When they go bad ATF will leak out of the vent on the top of the transaxle. And possibly a valve body issue causing a bypass condition and out the vent.

This was covered in a TSB from GM on all GM cars '97-'05 with the 4T65E transaxle.

BTW - This needs to be fixed soon as possible since ATF can catch on fire if it hits the hot exhaust.

Re: Totally stumped!!!!

It looks like it wasn't rebuilt properly. Common problem is leaving the valve body bolts loose or not properly torqued which will eventually show up as the problem you are having where ATF spills out the vent. It looks like another rebuild or total replacement.

Re: Totally stumped!!!!

What an aggravation!! It doesn't suprise me though. THe man who rebuilt it the first time was a slacker!! He had it for like 2 MONTHS!!! Is there any way to prove that he didnt rebuild it right so I could get some compensation??? I hate that I have this much money in this and its time to do it alllll over again!! I should have just bought a rebuild kit and had my fiance do it. It would ave been cheaper nd we wouldn't have been out anything but the kit had he messed it up!! lol!! Does anybody know of any fairly priced websites I could look at to get a new or used tranny?? Thanks soooo much!!
