2004 Aveo road noise issue

Hey all,
I have a issue I was wondering if anyone had knowledge on. To give some background last winter I smacked a cruve going like 20 MPH toasted the rim shattered hubcap, I got that replaced and fixed. Ever since then though theres been a noise when i've been driving down the road like a whom whom sound. Sometimes its faster and louder than other times, at times its quiet basically unheard but recently it seems to be loud more often than not. My dad helped me check the wheel components and they all looked ok. Maybe unrelated or related to the accident he said it could be a transaxle issue but I have no idea to what type of issue specifically or how to fix. Manny transmission by the way.

Any opinions or knowledge would be helpfull thanks.

Sounds like a noise a wheel bearing could make. What tire/wheel did you hit? Is that the wheel making the noise?

If it one of the fronts you can set the emergency brake or chock the rear wheels so the car cannot move. Place the trans in neutral. Jack up the side of the car making the noise. Spin the tire by hand while holding the spring on the strut. If you can feel a vibration there is a good chance its the wheel bearing. Especially if you don't feel the same thing on the other side.

Typically they will start making noise around 30mph. When it is making noise you can usually get it to change the noise its making by turning fairly aggressively to the right or left (in a place that allows you to do so!).

Makes noise even at 20 mph seems to be no less though. I've listened closely and does seem to be coming from the front though not sure if its a specific side. Have yet to do the wheel bearing check although it could seem to be another issue. Anything else besides a wheelbearing that could cause noise? Also listening closely seems to be a hum hum hum hhmhmhmmhmhm sound depending if that sheds any light.

It would seem that the accident would have caused this, but I know if you have a tire with a broken belt inside the rubber, it will cause the tire to be out of round and will make the noise that you are describing. Just run your hand around the tire and feel if there are any "humps" or "bumps", particularly on the outer edges of the tire.

Toni.
