Tamiya MP4/5B chassis colors

I'm in the process on building the MP4/5B in 1/20th scale
the chassis has 2 distinctive colors one of a bronze color and another a black color
if this is actually carbon fiber and is there a carbon decal to match it

This is what I did

The chassis has a mild texture, but no real pattern unless the light happens to catch the fibres. However, the nose section does have more of a pattern that you could replicate with something like SMS twill weave.

Re: Tamiya MP4/5B chassis colors

The monocoque is indeed carbon fibre. There are many different colours and patterns of carbon fibre on F1 cars from this era. Use a mixture of patterns and don't forget than you can add colour over the top of the carbon fibre (the clear paints thinned down work well). The SMS twill Scuderia recommends is very good and available in a variety of colours. I've used the bronze one on my F189.

Re: Tamiya MP4/5B chassis colors

I built mine a while ago, there's a w.i.p and completed thread if you do a search. Its difficult to replicate the exact look. I used a mixture of paint and carbon decals to try and achieve the 'bronze' colour. I also over sprayed the decals with very thin clear coat tinted with clear colours. It sort of worked. In some of the pictures it is more noticeable than others and it also depends on the way the light catches it.

The 'bronze' look is visible in this one at the front, although the rear looks grey/black in comparison

This was my favourite picture of my finished model. When you compare the 'bronze' look of the monocoque to the black of the tyres and suspension components it really seemed to have worked quite well.
