Coolant seep solved. What holds the rear brake pad pins in place?

Coolant seep was from the back of the intake manifold. Much easier to see when observed under flourescent light. Cleaned it up then re-torqued the manifold. All seems well now after re-filling the radiator and letting the air bleed out.

Going over the car I ran into another issue. On my LR caliper one of the pad locating pins was about 1/4" backed out. I noticed there are no cotter pins like on the front calipers. I put it back in, but it looks like the only thing holding it in is the friction from the pad spring. The end of the pin has a clip of sorts that is wider and will rotate... is that supposed to stop it from backing out?

Also, I found that my RR caliper needs more shims to get the pad oriented correctly on the rotor. The inside pad was wearing a lip over the inside of the rotor ring to the point that I had to unbolt the caliper to get the pad out. I ground down the lip on the pad, but I can't find these shims anywhere. Fastenal was closed and I didn't think to check a brake shop until too late. The auto parts stores and home depot/lowes didn't have anything even cose.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Coolant seep solved. What holds the rear brake pad pins in place?

Ended up making my own shims today by drilling out some washers I had w/ a 1/2" drill bit. All is perfect now. Brakes are bled and it's all put back together. I still don't quite understand what prevents the pad pins form backing out in the rear setup. Anyone know?

Brian, I think those spring clips do keep the pin from backing out. I used a punch to make sure the pin was knocked in and seated properly. If you need new ones I'd check McMaster-Carr... www.mcmaster.com

Agreed. I was puzzled when I first changed mine too - it's the spring clip and the tapered end that gets punched in/out...

Ok... I'll hit them w/ a punch to be 100% sure, but I was able to get them to fully seat w/o one.

If you can fully seat them without using a punch Brian then they are likely to "float" or come out.

Mine need to be given a good knock to seat them. Sometimes I have thought they were seated but actually were not due to punch not being aligned properly.

If after retrying with a punch and they are not going in any further, then it seems likely that the spring retainer has lost its "mojo" and needs to be replaced.

Thanks Kel... I'll give them a good tap w/ a punch and monitor them when I move wheels around.
