Fuel pump issues-2002 GA SE

First, I gotta tell you that I love this forum.. You guys do a really good job with information and assistance.

I have a 2002 Grand Am SE... 3.4 liter, 105,000 miles.

Last week, I was going down I-75 at about 70mph, when I felt the car shudder as bit. The car immediately started slowing down, and any pressure on the accelerator did nothing. I pulled the car over, paid 250.00 for a tow to Orlando, where the car still sits.

When I turn on the key, I do not hear the fuel pump. The security lite is on solid (been that way for 4 years... since I've owned the car). I don't think it is a passlock issue.

Is there a way to test voltage to the pump directly? How does one remove the pump? How the fuel tank have to be removed?

Any help you can give me will be deeply appreciated.

first check Fuel pump / injector fuse (15A), also check FP relay.

I would agree to check the fuse(s) and the FP relay.

Does sounds like a security issue shutting you down on the highway. Or it could be lack of fuel.

Here is the security relearn to try and see if it'll work, you never know.

Security relearn procedure:

1) Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.
2) Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is illuminated.
3) Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)
4) Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 11 minutes.
5) Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds.
6) Repeat #1 - #5 for 3 cycles.
7) On 4th attempt, car should start.

NOTE : Since this is a fairly long procedure, I would limit all electrical sources, such as disconnecting headlights, to prevent discharge of battery.

NOTE 2 : It is SAFE to wait LONGER than the allotted time, but it is not safe to wait less time. I.e. 12 minutes instead of 11 minutes should be safe; however, waiting 10 minutes instead of 11 minutes is not safe.

Properly executed, this procedure should take approximately 35 minutes to complete

On the fuel tank you need to drain it down if at all possible.
Then using a jack to support the tank loosen the two bolts/nuts holding the straps which hold the tank in place under the rear seat area.
Once its lowerd be carefull not to break any hoses or wires, their are several to remove BEFORE you can pull the tank all the way down and out. And remember or mark where they all go.
Then using a large screw driver or something to drive the large ring loose which hold the pump assembly in the tank.
Then you just pull the unit out.
