'97 Jetta

I have a '97 Jetta 2.0 and it won't start. the dash lights are on but the switch just turns it I can't get the engine to turn. What do you think. I charged the battery and when reinstalled the alarm did go off and I turned it off but still no engine start. HELP!

Re: '97 Jetta

I would start by changing the ignition switch. Any auto parts store should stock it.

Re: '97 Jetta

Did you find a fix for your no start problem?

I just washed my daughters 1998 Jetta GLS and then she went to start it and then the alarm went off and now it will not crank (no power to starter).

This may have something to do with the alarm module but I know it has something to do with washing the car as well.

A month ago after washing her car, and then while driving to get the oil changed the alarm beeped once and the lights flashed. Had to unlock the car with the key fob to get out of it.

There must be something shorting after washing the car thereby giving the alarm module an open circuit signal and disabling the starter relay.

I have read how to bypass the module to get the car to start (jumping wires #5 & #6 from alarm module) but have also read where then changing the alarm module did not fix the problem. Probably due to an open circut (door or hood sensor).
