Holes in Windstar Muffler
Hey guys, I have a 1999 windstar 3.8
I was checking my exhaust today because I felt like it had a leak and the onyl place I could feel air coming out of was under the muffler. There are two holes on the bottom of the muffler and they are on opposite ends on the muffler, they seem to be exactly the same size about the size of a pen tip. I was wondering if everyone else has these 2 holes on their mufflers becuase they seem to be stock from factory because they dont seem to be rusted out or anything. Water does leak out from both of the holes. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Holes in Windstar Muffler
yep, drain holes. They're fine and don't plug them. Surprisingly, the winstar exhaust, aside from the flex pipe, is pretty solid. Mine has been fine since 2000 and I've only had to replace 2 rubber hangers.

Re: Holes in Windstar Muffler
+1... agree with northern piper.
Those drain holes is what keeps the muffler from rotting prematurely!

Re: Holes in Windstar Muffler
Thanks guys, I thought they were stock since they were perfectly spaced and the exact same size, good thing I dont have to waste money on a new exhaust

Re: Holes in Windstar Muffler
Those holes are more likely Sound attenuation tuning holes, that break-up the standing wave inside the muffler, so that the overall sound of the vehicle is lower. Acting as a drain is an added benefit.

Re: Holes in Windstar Muffler
Figured in might as well put in my 2 cents since I have a 99 3.8L. Car is 11 years old and muffle/piping is original and seems in good shape. Inspection due in Sept so well see if she passes? Like the others 2 holes is what I and are for drainage.

Re: Holes in Windstar Muffler
The cat-back part of my exhaust on my '96 3.8L was factory original.....no sign of any problem.
It is in MUCH better shape than the one on my 2003 Toyota Sienna!!!
