94 transmission problem

94 plymouth voyager. 3.3, 4 spd auto tranny, fwd. Friends Van.

She was driving home Monday night and she heard a loud bang, noise.
Had it towed home.

I started it today to check out and found that there is no reverse, when I shifted to reverse that is a rattling type noise but no reverse. It does engage into drive. I am thinking that a planetary shaft broke.

Am I thinking correctly.

Sad thing is that I just replaced the rack and pinion Sunday along with both cv axle halfshafts within the last 1,000 miles.

Body has very little rust, runs fine except for a IAC problem. I don't think it is worth fixing tranny or replacing.

Any suggestions on tranny on what a rebuild kit would cost??

thanks

Re: 94 transmission problem

I think you are correct, probably some hard parts have broken.

The problem is, such parts are not included in a rebuild kit, and would be extra cost, depending on what's broken. Don't bother rebuilding that one, it will cost too much

Imo a wrecking yard trans (Maybe $150 - 250), or a professionally - rebuilt one ($1000 with a new converter) on exchange is the way to go.

It's a shame.... with the Cash For Clunkers program, there are probably thousands such Chrysler transmissions, or entire nice-running vans that are just going to be crushed, instead of keeping your friend on the road...
