Life without TV

After some consideration, I have decided to give up the national pacifier.... television.

In recent years, I find I watch less and less of it. Imo real life and real people are more interesting. I am too busy with work, school, hobbies, outdoor recreation and family to be bothered with it.

Also, Imo most of the stuff on TV is nonsense. All the TV news and information is terribly simplistic. Decent newspapers and newsmagazines are much better.

Virtually all the TV fictional programming is annoying to me these days. I am too concerned about my own life to be interested in the fictional lives of fictional characters.

Talk shows? I have no interest in entertainment celebrities plugging their next project ....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........

I'll still watch movies, DVD's etc, and a couple of programs I simply can't live without are available on-line.

Also, the $750 I will save on cable each year is a bonus... yes I know TV can be cheaper, but the quality isn't there............

So, has anyone else done this?

Re: Life without TV

I gave this concept a try for a couple of years ago mainly out of necessity rather than choice. Working sun up -sun down on race cars, friends cars, regular job, part time jobs and so on. It gets difficult to find time for Television. I did not miss it though. The quality of programing has gone down hill for the most part. Commercials kill the programs.

Unfortuneatly now I find myself consumed wth television on Chemo treatment days just trying to pass the time. I do however enjoy watching all the old programs on TV Land etc.

Re: Life without TV

I was the kind of kid who grew up in the country always spending his time outside so I never got sucked into the whole TV thing. There was a short phase in my childhood where I was absolutely sucked into cartoons on Saturday mornings but I soon outgrew it. Growing up without cable makes it easier to not NEED it when your older. I had it for about a year and barely ever watched it so I canceled it. As long as I have the internet to keep up with my work and some entertainment then I'm in good shape. I can always go to the theaters to see a good movie if I want some mind numbing entertainment that will entertain me for a few hours... There are so many more important things out there than what Brittney or Paris' latest publicity stunt might be...

TV = Waste
Movies = Awesome

Re: Life without TV

I really don't watch a lot of TV at all either, the only shows i still watch are top gear and lost. The only other thing I tune in for is the news, but other wise I am only bothered about watch films/dvds etc that I know I will enjoy.
