Question Check engine light when I let off the gas

So I'm looking to buy a car. I had a 01 Lincoln Continental and loved it. I just test drove a 2003 Lincoln LS V8 with only 54k miles on it. The engine sounded beautiful and the shifts were strong and smooth. However, I noticed that when I floored the pedal to feel the shifts and I would get to about 80-90mph then let off the gas the check engine light would blink then go away. What could cause that? Would that be normal? I did it about 4-5 times to try and reproduce the engine light coming on and only got it to do it twice and only after I had pushed it hard from 0-80 or 90, 0-60 seemed fine. Any ideas, should I stay away from it? I like the car, every option: navigation, THX speakers, heated/cooled seats, etc... Thanks

Re: Check engine light when I let off the gas

Will the owner let you take the car by a local chain auto parts store to have the codes read? If not, you might want to stay away, but if so, have the codes read and see what the code is. If the code is something like HEGO slow to respond I'm not sure that I'd stay away from the car but rather use that as a negotiating factor.

If it really was flashing, then it was for misfires. This is a common issue with the LS related to COP coil failures. The 03 you looked at is covered by Ford factory warranty 100% for 10 years and 100K miles for this issue. (True for 2003, 2004, and 2005.)

It was flashing. And only for a short while. Would warranty transfer though? I guess I should ask a dealer.

Re: Check engine light when I let off the gas

I talked to a Lincoln dealer and they told me the same thing. They said they just need to run a diagnostic test on it to see if it is the problem that the warranty covers. If it is I'm going to make an offer on the car. Thanks for the help!
