98 1500 4x4 OBD code P1404

My 1998 1500 Z71 has an OBD code of P1404. It comes up as EGR system valve 2. What is this and how do I fix it. Also could this be why the engine seems to shutter under load at around 3500rpm? I just did fuel filter, pump, plugs, wires.

You probably just need to remove the egr and clean it, the actual code description is egr closed position performance

Re: 98 1500 4x4 OBD code P1404

I just used carb cleaner and a wire brush to clean them up, they get dirty from the exhaust flow through them.

The EGR valve is about the size of a beer can and is on the top front of the motor, I'd say about directly behind the idler pulley. Just mark it so you don't put it back on 180 degrees off, it won't cause any damage but the truck might run like crap

Thanks, hopefully a good cleaning will work as i see there not cheap. Also I see there is a small star screw on the bottom, do I remove this and take the valve apart to clean it?

these parts wear out,,,also the valves operation with heat causes over time to get out of normal operating range..

you might find a valve at the scrap yard to get you by...look up what vehcle's use the part and start hunting...if this works then you know for sure its this part..not some controlling componet..

Nah, leave the screw alone. Just clean it out and put it back in the way you took it out. I've done this on about 4 trucks and it makes a difference. If your valve is bad, then your problem won't get better and you know you need to replace it. But the cost of trying to clean it is cheap - better than replacing the valve when it's just dirty...

Thanks for the help, took it apart and cleaned it. Was towing the boat again and could barely make it up a steep grade, truck was shuttering. New code says cylinder missfires. I'm thinking maybe distributer since I've done plugs and wires. ??????????????
